Killdeer Plains 3.14.05

A visit to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area in Wyandot County produced the following pictures. The Northern Saw-whet Owl was in the "traditional owl grove" on the south side of C71 between T103 and OH67. It was in one of the pines closer to the field on the west side. The Red-headed Woodpeckers were in the woods along the west side of T123, south of C75. Park in the 1st pulloff that you come to on the right and walk up the dike. The Bald Eagle was along Wyandot-Marion Rd. between Washburn and T115. The Long-eared Owl was also in "owl grove" in the tall trees in the middle of the grove. The weather was sunny with temperatures in the 30's. We arrived at about 10:00am and stayed till about 4:00pm. Many Harriers, Kestrels, Red-taileds were present. 3 Short-eared Owls were along C71 between T103 and T123. Most of the waterfowl was at a great distance. However, we did have some good looks Tundra Swans, Redheads, Ring-necked Ducks, and Hooded Mergansers. Canada Geese were abundant. I'm sure we could have found other species of waterfowl if we had been more patient with our time using the scope. Along Washburn, we had several Killdeer. One Meadowlark was found along T115.
