Almost every spring since 1980, we have vacationed on Kiawah Island or in that area. This is just south of Charleston, SC.
We enjoyed the lack of the hustle and bustle of the every day world. We enjoyed the tennis, the beach and the relaxation.
We chose Kiawah originally because of the tennis. At that time, we were playing 3 and 4 times a day. Bart loved the huge beaches and the pools. Later he played tennis too.
The island changed considerably over the years. It is now far more crowded that it once was. In those early years, two thirds of the island were not even developed. Those were the days of the Jeep Safaris. A line of jeeps would make its way back through what was jungle to us. The leader would comment on different things by way of CB radio.
Kiawah still remains a favorite destination for us. The jeeps are gone, but bikes and canoes can still get you to some remote areas. And, of course, there is still the beach and the ocean. As our interest in birding has developed, Kiawah has been a location for many of our "best" birds.
These pictures were from 2002, they are not unlike hundreds of other pictures taken over the years: each a fond memory.
